Chances are, at some point in your life, you have built a home or you know someone who has lived through the emotional and financial ups and downs that come with taking on such a feat. Budgets never finish where they start, even in a fixed fee project. There’s also something you want that was part of the quote that ends up as an added cost. Or a material you don’t like and somehow end up … upgrading from granite to stone or teak to ipe. What about paint colors, light fixtures and the most challenging of all, cabinetry. Of course, you can just paint it all white and call it a day. But most of us want our imprint on it.

Now imagine all of those challenges, decisions, applications that come with home construction. Then imagine managing it across country or continent borders. Of course, you have to throw in local municipalities and their process or lack thereof. And building in a country like Costa Rica brings rainy season and extended holidays that we are certainly not used to in the U.S.

So yes, if you have any intention of building a house in a country like Costa Rica, you will need maximum patience. You will need to strip away all sense of your Western mentality to find pura vida.

Or, forget about building. Alleviate the stress of managing the build, or paying someone local to manage your build. Rather than wait three plus years for the process, find something on the market today while prices are on a gradual [but before they really scale] incline. An area like Nosara has no shortage of modern, island and tico style homes. No patience needed.
